Digital x-rays are a fast and comfortable tool we use to assess your dental needs. They are safe enough to be used during pregnancy, and some studies have found that they emit up to 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays. With no chemical processing needed, digital x-rays are a good choice for you and the environment.
X-rays are commonly used in dental exams of patients of all ages, because many problems with the teeth and surrounding tissues cannot be seen by the naked eye. An x-ray is needed to reveal:
- Most areas of decay between teeth or below existing restorations
- Infections in the jaw bones
- Gum disease
- Abscesses or cysts
- Developmental abnormalities
- Some types of tumors
Galileos 3D X-rays
The GALILEOS 3D x-ray imaging system is making high-quality, 3D digital x-rays a reality for doctors and their patients. How? A digital x-ray scanner is mounted on a mechanical arm that rotates around a patient's head, projecting x-rays in a computer-controlled, cone-shaped beam. In a matter of seconds, all data sites/all/themes/bootstrap-business/images needed are collected after one complete pass of the scanner. The detailed sites/all/themes/bootstrap-business/images can then be called up on a computer screen in a variety of angles and views, including 2D, 3D, and panorama. This allows us to fully see the relationship between patients' teeth, bones, nerves, tissues, and airways like never before, making us exceptionally equipped for diagnostic and treatment planning decisions. We believe complete information is a vital component of comprehensive care!
Like digital x-rays, digital photographs with our intraoral camera are a useful diagnostic and patient education tool. Through the use of a tiny camera attached to a hand-held wand we can show you incredibly clear pictures of your teeth and gums. These pictures not only enable us to identify problem areas like a cracked tooth or a broken filling, but we can visually guide you through your diagnosis and treatment options. You also get a much clearer picture of your teeth than what a hand held mirror can show you. The intraoral camera provides you with the opportunity to be a partner with us in keeping your mouth and smile healthy and strong!
VELscope® for Oral Cancer Screening
When it comes to oral cancer, early detection is key. Regular oral cancer screenings are an effective way to discover oral cancer at an early, highly curable stage. Our office has the latest technology in oral cancer screening. VELscope® is a state-of-the-art, painless, non-invasive screening tool which helps us to see what we cannot see with the unaided eye.
What can you expect during a VELscope examination? After conducting a thorough oral cancer examination, we will use a handheld device to shine a blue light into your mouth when examining the tissues through a special eyepiece. This technology takes advantage of your mouth’s natural fluorescence, which is normally invisible. Using the blue light, we can look for specific changes in the color or the structure of your oral tissues that might be indicative of abnormal cells. Digital x-rays also aid in the detection of oral cancer by enabling Dr. Somaiya to see possible tumors and other problems associated with the jaw.
